Welcome to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital

  • Vision Statement - To be a world-leading Veterinary Teaching Hospital

  • Mission - To provide outstanding education through clinical services and advancement of knowledge in an excellent environment
Massey University, Palmerston North, is home to the only veterinary school in New Zealand. The veterinary school is a centre of excellence in veterinary science. Our veterinary programme was one of the first (and still is one of few) outside the United States to meet the stringent accreditation standards set by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital, a part of the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences (IVABS) exists to facilitate the practical teaching of veterinary undergraduates in the latter years of their course. We have access to the latest technology and since our senior clinical staff have postgraduate training, we are fortunate to be able to offer a very high level of care. The local community can benefit from the expertise offered by the Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (MUVTH).

Along with the referral services we offer to veterinarians around the country, we also operate a community practice where the public can bring their pets and animals to us without the need for referral. We cater to all animals, no matter how big or how small! There is a companion animal clinic for pets, a farm service clinic for production animals and an equine clinic for horses.

We maintain a Veterinary Internships and Residencies Index of positions available in universities and private practice.

The Massey University Degree in Veterinary Science is internationally recognized for producing practical graduates with a strong science base, a broad knowledge of companion and production animal health, an independence of thought and excellent problem solving skills.

Now vets can obtain a clinically relevant postgraduate qualification in Veterinary Science while still working, through our Distance Learning Programs - Postgraduate Veterinary Extramural Study.
